Atlantic coast of Morocco near Taghazout

Morocco is the closest place to Europe where you surf in boardshorts in December, or almost. A three-hour flight, 18-degree water, waves every day from October to March and a coast, between Agadir and Essaouira, that has become the home of surfing in North Africa. Here is how it works, spot by spot.

When to go

The wave season on the Atlantic coast runs from October to March: North Atlantic swells arrive regularly, the sun is almost always out and during the day you are in a t-shirt. In summer the waves are small, perfect for learning but less interesting for those who already surf. We leave in autumn, when the waves are good and the surf camps are not full yet.

The spots, from easiest to most serious

  • Tamraght, Banana Beach and Devil's Rock: sandy beaches, soft waves, this is where first lessons happen. The village is quiet, with surf camps on the rooftops and fresh bread in the morning.
  • Taghazout, Hash Point and Panoramas: the surf town, boards hanging outside the shops and sunsets from the terrace. Waves for those with some experience.
  • Anchor Point: the most famous right-hander in Morocco, long and powerful. Watch it from the cliff if you are a beginner, surf it if you are intermediate or above.
  • Imsouane: an hour north, a bay with a wave of over 500 metres, slow and perfect for longboards and for anyone who wants to ride for ages. It is the day trip of the journey.

How much it costs

A lesson with a local instructor, board and wetsuit included, costs between 15 and 25 euros. A surf camp with room, breakfast and lessons is between 35 and 70 euros a day. A flight to Agadir from Europe, booked a few months ahead, between 100 and 250 euros: that is what makes Morocco the most affordable surf trip.

Life in a surf camp on the coast

Up at 7, breakfast on the roof, van to the spot of the day chosen by the tides. Two hours in the water, tagine for lunch, afternoons between yoga, skating and a walk in Taghazout. In the evening everyone is on the rooftop watching the sunset with mint tea. After three days you know everybody.

In Morocco you need a wetsuit, not a watch.

Alone or with a group

Alone is easy and safe, but you easily stay in the surf camp bubble. With a group trip you surf every morning and see the country for the rest of the day: the souk of Agadir, Paradise Valley in the Anti Atlas, dinner with a Berber family, the day in Imsouane.

That is the Morocco surf group trip we are preparing for 2027: fixed base between Tamraght and Taghazout, group of 8 to 15 people, Giada with you from start to finish. Join the waiting list and we write to you when the dates are out.
